Chojun Miyagi Sensei stated, “Hojo undo are practised with the aim of perfecting the kata.” In the same lecture, given in Osaka on January 28th, 1936, he went on to say, “…kata is an exercise for the whole body, while the individual movements are performed with the objective of self-defense.” This second volume of the series brings together these two concepts by demonstrating in great detail the supplementary exercises, or Hojo Undo, and the basic kata Gekki Sai Dai Ichi & Gekki Sai Dai Ni, and Saifa. Following Miyagi Senseis teaching method, the individual movements are explained, as is their role in the complete version of the kata. Author Morio Higaonna is the student of Anichi Miyagi, who studied exclusively with the Founder of Goju Ryu karate, Chojun Miyagi. Higaonna Sensei is assisted in this presentation by Instructor Tetsuji Nakamura.
What is Martial arts ?
Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practiced for a number of reasons such as self-defense; military and law enforcement applications; competition; physical, mental, and spiritual development; entertainment; and the preservation of a nation’s intangible cultural heritage.
Although the term martial art has become associated with the fighting arts of East Asia, it originally referred to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. The term is derived from Latin and means “arts of Mars”, the Roman god of war. Some authors have argued that fighting arts or fighting systems would be more appropriate on the basis that many martial arts were never “martial” in the sense of being used or created by professional warriors.
